What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine with a cobb angle of more than ten degrees. Scoliosis can be caused by a range of factors and can occur at any age however the most common form is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis which will be discussed on this website. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the most common form of scoliosis and is usually diagnosed between 9-15 years old. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis occurs during periods of fast growth in children. The name idiopathic indicates that the cause is unknown, and therefore scoliosis can occur in an otherwise healthy child for no apparent reason. Scoliosis curves can be stable, which means they reach a certain point and no longer progress or that they can be controlled with a brace or that they do not progress after skeletal maturity. Progressive curves continue to progress in degree, and may stop after skeletal maturity if under 40-50 degrees. Progressive curves do not always respond to bracing. Scoliosis is a three dimensional abnormal curvature of the spine, where it is curved sideways (as can be seen in the picture above), twisted inwards/outwards, which causes the ribs to stick out on one side, and can be curved inwards or outwards (in extreme cases kyphosis.) |
